Which are best: iPad or Android tablets? What's the difference between them, and which should you choose? We shall first discuss the Android and Apple software platforms in general, and then discuss them in terms of tablet computers, specifically the iPad 2 and the Android Honeycomb operating system used in the Motorola Xoom tablet.

The fundamental difference between the Apple and Android operating systems for tablet computers is that the Apple system is a closed system, specific only to apple devices, while Android is open source. That means that Android is free for developers to use, both in terms of designing apps to run with it, and in the hardware using it as a platform.

Android now belongs to Google, who purchased it form the developers Android Inc. in 2005. Google made it open source, under the Open Handset Alliance (OHA). It is available as part of the Apache free software license. In 2010, it was listed by Canalys as the best-selling software platform for smartphones worldwide.

A Common Platform

That's the background for Android, which is now being used in tablets in competition to Apple's iPad. Because the iPad uses a proprietary software platform, it is by nature more restrictive than Android devices, and therefore does not have the same breadth of communication between devices as Android tablets would theoretically have. However, because Android tablets are in their infancy, this degree of platform commonality has yet to be used to any advantage.

In fact, it is highly likely that individual Android users will be protective of their own devices, and that the full benefits of a common platform are unlikely to be developed. Nevertheless, because of this common platform, it is highly likely in the future that apps and other forms of software will tend to focus on Android rather than Apple. For now, however, there is still a larger choice of apps available for Apple devices than for Android tablets - but this is expected to be only a temporary situation because development of Android apps is now continuous.

iPad 2 Vs Android Tablets

So how does all this translate into the hardware using each of the two operating systems? It is fundamentally now a comparison of the iPad 2 with the top Android tablets. There are several tablets that fail to match iPad let alone iPad 2, but there have been several good tablets developed using Android by top firms such as Acer, Samsung and Motorola, and is the latter that we shall consider here.

The Motorola Zoom Tablet uses the Android Honeycomb OS, and is thicker and heavier than the iPad 2 (0.34 v 0.5 inches). Both have dual-core 1GHz processors, but the Zoom has 1GB RAM against the 512MB believed to be offered by the iPad 2.

One excellent feature of the Xoom is that you can plug it into your PC and access your files. You can transfer files or download from one the other. With the iPad 2 this is a ponderous process that has to be done through iTunes. No need you use iTunes to download music: you can easily download music to the Xoom tablet by drag and drop without requiring a massive ponderous iTunes file to reside on your memory.

Multitasking Comparison

Another advantage of the Android tablet is that it is true multitasking which the iPad is not. The iPad is more a matter of changing between tasks, with a small amount of processing in the background, but not true multitasking. There are many other benefits that the Android tablets can offer over the iPad 2, including more flexibility in file handling, and icon presentation. You are not restricted to Apple formats because you can use any that uses the Android open source software.

However, the iPad does have some advantages in addition to being thinner and lighter, and one of these is the number of available apps as suggested earlier. This is likely because most tablet apps are based on the iPad, and are generally developments of the apps developed for the iPhone. Now, however, an increasing number are being created on the Android platform, and it will not be long before they overtake the iPad apps.

Apple Fan or Android Fan

Ultimately, the choice between the iPad and an Android tablet, exemplified here by the Motorola Xoom, will possibly come down to whether or not you are an Apple fan. Apple fans will likely stick to the Apple product, while there currently appears to be no compelling reason why PC fans should go with the iPad rather than the Xoom - though there are more excellent Android tablets on the market.

The Android software platform has been slowly but gradually eating into the Apple market, and, as more firms offer their own versions of Android tablets, this competition against the iPad 2 will increase. Before long, the tablet market will be very similar to the current situation in the laptop market where we have those that go with the Apple way of doing things and those that prefer Windows. Except it is now Apple Vs Android. Who will win - you will decide that.

For the past couple of weeks, I've been testing out Apple's new iPad 2 against its most immediate competition, Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1v. I should point out before I start this that I've been using an iPad (version 1) since Australian launch last year, whereas the Galaxy Tab 10.1v is much more of a newcomer. Android tablets have been available since last year, but the 10.1v is the first model in Australia to use Google's tablet-specific version of Android, informally known as "Honeycomb". Make of that potential bias what you will.

Pricing:

iPad 2 16GB: $579/$729

Galaxy Tab 10.1v: $729

The two pricing variants on the iPad2 are there as Apple offers it in both a with and without 3G option; if you see the cheaper iPad2, it's the one that doesn't offer mobile broadband, just WiFi. It's pretty obvious that this is a clearly tied pricing race for comparable tablets, though. There are catches to both approaches that may not be immediately evident. It's possible to spend quite a bit more on an iPad2 -- up to $949 -- but that comes with increased storage capability, up to 64GB, where the 10.1v is a stock, set, unchangeable 16GB. On the flip side, the 10.1v, which is exclusive to Vodafone, is offered by the carrier under contract from as little as $39 a month with data included. From a budgetary perspective, that's pretty compelling.

Look & Feel:

Apple's whole marketing schtick behind the iPad2 is that it's slimmer than the original iPad, and this is indeed true; at 8.8mm thick it's slender and tapered beautifully. The Galaxy Tab 10.1v is by comparison a chunky beast, but this hides something of a hidden advantage. The back of the tablet is textured and gently contoured inwards, making it easy to grip even without a case. By comparison, the iPad2's back is relatively slippery unless you pop it in a case -- at which point the thickness advantage goes away.

Again it's pretty neck and neck; the larger screen of the 10.1v and improved resolution are nice, but the fact that it's a fixed memory size is an oddity in the Android world and sticks out like a sore thumb.

Performance:

This is a considerably more subjective thing, and a lot harder to call. There's no doubt that Honeycomb is a much better version of Android than the previous tablets offered, as the native applications make better use of the screen space, the onscreen navigation is very sna

ppy, the mail client works well and the browser is just that little bit quicker than the iPad2. Using the online Browsermark benchmark, I recorded a score of 88717 for the Galaxy Tab 10.1v compared to 70310 for the iPad2. If your application needs are modest, the Galaxy Tab 10.1v delivers nicely. The problem for Android is that there's still a dearth of genuine "Honeycomb" applications for Android, and running older Android applications is a very hit and miss affair. Some scale up to the full screen neatly, while others occupy only a tiny area of the screen, or shrink everything down so small as to be useless. Comparatively, the iPad2 not only has a rich array of native applications on offer, but also scales up the vast majority of iPhone applications with only a little bit of pixel chunkiness as a drawback. Honeycomb should improve over time in this regard, but right now it's not quite there.

Conclusions:

The 10.1v is a solid iPad2 competitor, but it's not quite there yet, and it's something that Samsung's all too well aware of. The company has already announced that newer models of the Galaxy Tab 10 will be forthcoming in slimmer frames and possibly with more storage. It's good to see competition to Apple in this space, but for right now, I'd still say that the richer application infrastructure supporting the iPad2 makes it a better buy. If you're staunchly anti-Apple for whatever reason, I reckon it'd still be worth saving your money for more Android tablets, and critically more native Honeycomb applications to hit the marketplace.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 has a 10.1-inch, 1280 x 800 pixel screen. This is about half an inch larger than the iPad 2.

Still, we give the iPad 2 an edge in this category.

3. Build and Design

The build quality and design of apple are quite exquisite. The iPad 2 is a perfect representation of the company's commitment to those ideals.

The iPad 2 is slimmer and lighter than its older brother but we did not feel a sacrifice in build quality and use of materials. It's more comfortable to carry now because the it feels solid.

The Samsung Galaxy 10.1 sports a 246.2 x 170.4 x 10.9mm, 599g size and weight dimensions. The Tab looks longer and the iPad 2 looks shorter and slimmer. Weight difference is negligible.

No doubt that iPad is winning this category.
Advantage: Apple iPad 2

4. Operating System

The iPad 2 operates with iOS 4.3. While it has improvements over the previous OS in terms of web browsing and application, the improvements seem like a minor tune-up.

On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1's Android 3.0 feels like it has been developed to take multi-tasking chores to another level. This "Honeycomb" OS also feels more user-friendly.

Advantage: Samsung Galaxy 10.1

5. Camera

The iPad 2's cameras are a 0.7-megapixel main camera with 720P HD capture capability. It also features and a secondary VGA camera for video-conferencing purposes.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has an impressive 8 megapixel dual LED flash, 1080p Full HD video, 24fps camera at the rear and a 2 megapixel camera in front.

6. Connectivity

EDR and A2DP capable and Bluetooth 2.1 are built in iPad 2. It also has Wi-Fi a,b,g & n, and an HDMI-output. However, it lacks a MicroSD slot, a USB port and a card reader. Its 3G connectivity is data only.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 3G connectivity. But, it has no SD card slot as well. So I guess a tie score would be fair for this category.

Advantage: Tie

Samsung have not released how much the Galaxy Tab 10.1 are going to be. Until that is announced, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has a slight edge over the Apple iPad 2.

Both the tablets rock the mobile industry with exactly the same specs and that’s very much the case in the imaging department since Samsung made a slight tinker to the rear camera on the Galaxy Tab. Both tablets will allow you all the video and stills capture you like as well as video calling too. 

Storage Capacity and Battery life:
